Winter Travel Basketball Teams

Thank you to everyone who attended the Souhegan Valley Basketball Winter Travel League tryouts! We were excited to see so many players participate and appreciate the effort, enthusiasm, and sportsmanship shown throughout the evaluation process.

What is Winter Travel Basketball?

Our teams compete in the same league as nearby towns that also have travel basketball teams. In the past, we've played teams from Hollis/Brookline, Litchfield, Concord, Hooksett, and other towns. Travel basketball can start as early as 3rd grade, although some towns begin offering teams in 5th grade or not at all. Our goal is to fill this gap by providing opportunities for all the towns we serve.

Can you be new to basketball?

Yes, our 3rd/4th grade team divisions have teams with a mix of beginners and past players. 

What is the difference between travel and recreation basketball?

🏀 Recreation Basketball

• Level of Play: More casual and inclusive. Players of all skill levels are welcome.

• Time Commitment: Typically just one practice and game per week.

• Focus: Fun, teamwork, and basic skill development.

🏀 Travel Basketball

• Level of Play: More Competitive. With our 5th-8th grade teams - players are usually selected through tryouts.

• Time Commitment: Multiple practices per week, one to two games on the weekend. Travel is comparable to recreation, to surrounding towns. 

• Focus: fun, teamwork, and skill development at a higher level.

FAQ's

🏀 Can players play on their middle school team and with Souhegan Valley Winter Travel?

Yes, we had several players last year who played with both their middle school team and for us. Why?  Hoop players just want to play as much as possible!! We understand this and share with the players that their middle school team takes priority. In most cases, players we're able to make  practices and all the games. We strive for one practice a week, once the middle school season starts rolling.

🏀 Can players play on other teams (AAU, Town Travel (non-MSBL league town travel), Town Rec, etc.) and with Souhegan Valley Winter Travel?

Yes! We had several players last year who played for multiple teams (for example, played for their recreational town team (non-travel) and with us. Why? Simply put, kids who love basketball want to play basketball whenever they can!

We understand that and work with each family to make sure expectations are clear and that basketball commitments are balanced appropriately. Most players were still able to attend the majority of our practices and games.

Because we play in the Manchester Suburban League, players can only be rostered on one team within that league. However, if your child plays in another travel league, AAU or program, they can still play with us as well if that works best for your family.
